At Bar.Church, we believe that baptism is a vital expression of faith and obedience to Jesus Christ. We believe that baptism by submersion is a biblically rooted and symbolically rich practice that vividly represents a believer's identification with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. As an outward declaration of an inward transformation, baptism is a public testimony of a person's decision to follow Jesus.
Statement on Baptism
Who Can Baptize: Following the New Testament teachings and examples, we affirm that all believers who have committed their lives to Jesus Christ and understand the significance of baptism are empowered to baptize other believers. This practice is rooted in the Great Commission, where Jesus instructs His disciples to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19-20).
Our Beliefs:
Biblical Foundation: We believe that the practice of baptism by submersion is deeply rooted in the New Testament. The Greek word for baptism, "baptizo," means "to immerse" or "to dip." This method is consistently exemplified in the baptisms performed in the early church, as seen in passages such as Matthew 3:16, where Jesus was baptized by John in the Jordan River, and Acts 8:38-39, where Philip baptized the Ethiopian eunuch.
Symbolic Representation: Submersion vividly symbolizes the believer's participation in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. As the believer is lowered into the water, it represents dying to their old self and being buried with Christ. Rising out of the water symbolizes the believer's resurrection to a new life in Christ (Romans 6:3-4).
Public Declaration: Baptism by submersion serves as a public declaration of the believer's faith and commitment to follow Jesus. It is an outward expression of an inward transformation and a powerful testimony to the community of faith.
Mentorship and Discipleship: Those who baptize others should be prepared to mentor and support the new believers in their faith journey, helping them grow in their understanding and relationship with Jesus Christ.
Unity in Faith: We emphasize that baptism is a celebration of unity within the body of Christ. Regardless of who performs the baptism, the focus remains on the shared faith and commitment to Jesus.
Our Practice:
Preparation and Understanding: We ensure that individuals seeking baptism by submersion understand the significance of this act. This includes teaching about the biblical basis, the symbolic meaning, and the importance of baptism as an act of obedience to Christ. These resources can be found on our TEACH page under Baptism.
Resources: We provide resources and guidance for believers who wish to baptize others, ensuring they understand the biblical significance and responsibilities associated with this sacred act. These resources can be found on our TEACH page under Baptism.
Inclusive Participation: While we emphasize the importance of submersion, we welcome all believers who wish to be baptized, regardless of their background. We aim to create an inclusive and welcoming environment where everyone can experience this significant milestone in their faith journey.
Community Celebration: Baptism by submersion is conducted within the context of our faith community. We encourage the participation of family, friends, and fellow believers to witness and celebrate this important step of faith. This should include the sharing of testimonies to help reinforce the communal aspect of this important milestone in a believer's life.
Bring Glory to God: Baptism ceremonies are conducted in a manner that honors and glorifies God, with the involvement and support of your faith community.
By empowering all believers to baptize, we affirm the priesthood of all believers and the shared mission of making disciples. We celebrate the diversity and unity of the body of Christ, recognizing that the power of baptism lies in the name of Jesus and the work of the Holy Spirit. Our commitment is to uphold this practice with reverence, understanding, and a heart for fostering spiritual growth within our community.
While our beliefs and practices are specific, reflecting our Holiness roots, Bar.Church will not let differing views on baptism divide believers. Therefore, we practice both infant and believer's baptism and recognize various modes, including sprinkling, pouring, and immersion. We will explain the symbolism of immersion and the importance of a believer's baptism, but we will not let differing beliefs cause division among believers or within the church. After all, baptism is not necessary for salvation, emphasizing God's grace and individual faith.
